One of the aims of this thesis is to heed the advice of former studies and concentrate efforts on resolving the molecular phylogenetic history of a poorly sampled group, the order Sporochnales. To date only two of the ten genera have been sampled, represented by Sporochnus pedunculatus, Sporochnus comosus and Carpomitra costata. Our objective is to comprehensively survey as much as is possible, all ten genera over their biogeographic range in an attempt to provide a clear picture of the inter-generic relationships within the order (establish monophyly?) and ultimately, its placement within the class Phaeophyceae.
